Significant Points:
Keen competition is expected for many jobs, particularly in large metropolitan areas where a large number of jobseekers are attracted by the glamour of this industry.
Hint: prepare a professional CV which you can send by e-mail to potential employers. Prepare for your interview and make sure you’re ready to fight for the job you want.
The broadcast and ProAV industries are a tight-know community and many job opportunities are not advertised on the open market.
Hint: Network every opportunity you get and make sure you are up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies that are shaping the future of your industry. Attend local trade shows, read industry magazines, participate in seminars and workshops, and search appropriate websites.
Job prospects will be best for applicants with a formal qualification in AV technology, broadcasting or a related field, and relevant experience, such as work at college radio and television stations or internships at professional stations.
Hint: A number of Colleges offer courses in broadcast and media studies, including courses that are specifically designed to enhance the skills of people currently working in the industry but who need to keep up to date with new techniques and/or technologies. Participate in industry training and certification programmes.
In this highly competitive industry, broadcasters are less willing to provide on-the-job training, and instead seek candidates who can perform the job immediately.
Hint: Keep up to date on developments within your industry and make an effort to learn on an on-going basis. Alvin Toffler was a US journalist and author who wrote: “the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” Make sure you have the skills you need to perform in the marketplace.
Many entry-level positions are at smaller broadcast stations; consequently, workers often must change employers, and sometimes relocate, in order to advance.
Hint: The world’s getting smaller and there are often job opportunities that are available to you in another location. Embrace the opportunity to explore the world. Map out a career path and ensure that you review your progress against your plan. There’s nothing worse than getting stuck in a dead-end job so define your goals and then make career choices based on your own unique objectives.
